Serenity (2005)

Rating: 8/10
Runtime 119 minutes

There aren't many movies that have me reaching for the dictionary. None are futuristic action flicks.
Imagine my bemusement when I hear the word "addlepated" in a sci fi flick. Is it a futuristic colloquialism? Is it a neologism? It turns out it is simply an archaic term no longer in use.

One of the charms of "Serenity" is that multisyllabic words that were once commonly used, but are currently antiquated in this time period, are back in use in the common vernacular.

"Serenity" is set in a universe where as human scientific knowledge increased, humanity's vocabulary also apparently increased. Yet, although we sound wiser, we certainly are no wiser. Our heroes are former freedom and resistance fighters who battled and lost against totalitarianism, and now scrounge a living through smuggling and other illicit ventures.

Apparently, there were not enough freedom fighters, as our heroes inhabit a universe where the powerful Alliance has complete control over the lives of its citizens. This includes the suppression of dissent, control of information, and the use of state power to enforce conformity and obedience.

In fact, our heroes find themselves to be unwilling protectors of a mysterious young woman, whose supernatural fighting abilities could be weaponized, and who has suppressed memories the fascist state would rather see mercilessly quashed, to the point where they are willing to dedicate their significant resources and might against one lone and solitary smuggling ship, Serenity.

Yes, this movie is a little like "Star Wars," but without the Death Star, lightsabers, and robots.

"If you can't do something smart, do something right."

You should not watch Serenity (2005) if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Serenity" (2005)? It's a movie about space cowboys, but there's not a single horse in sight! I mean, you'd think they could at least afford a space pony or something!

And let's talk about the Reavers. These are supposed to be the most feared creatures in the galaxy, but half the time they're just hanging out in their ship, waiting for someone to stumble upon them. They're supposed to be predators, but they act more like the world's scariest homebodies. "Oh, we could go out and terrorize the galaxy, but this season of 'The Bachelor' isn't going to watch itself."

Star Trek (2009)

J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot is another great space adventure that encapsulates some of the best elements of "Serenity". The film's witty dialogue, exciting action sequences, and brilliant ensemble cast make it a must-watch for any Sci-Fi fan. Plus, it ushers in a whole new series of adventures, so there's plenty to dive into if you enjoy this one.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

"Guardians of the Galaxy", directed by James Gunn, captures the sense of adventure, humor, and heart that made "Serenity" a hit with fans. It documents the escapades of a ragtag team of misfits in a galaxy filled with danger and excitement. Like Serenity, it effectively walks the line between sci-fi, action, and comedy.

Firefly (2002):

If you loved "Serenity", then you're going to enjoy "Firefly", from which "Serenity" is actually a follow-up. It's a television series rather than a movie, but it's cinematic in many ways. Directed by Joss Whedon, it's a unique mashup of Western and Sci-Fi, with exceptional character development and relationships. While it was only around for a single season, it has since cultivated a massive following.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015):

While "Mad Max: Fury Road" takes place in a post-apocalyptic desert rather than in space, it shares "Serenity's" thrill for adventure and unparalleled action sequences. George Miller's film is a non-stop, adrenaline-fueled ride that never lets up, filled with fascinating characters and some of the most impressive visual storytelling in recent memory.

Moon (2009):

"Moon", a sci-fi thriller directed by Duncan Jones, is another exceptional film. While it's not as action-packed as "Serenity", it's a fascinating and thought-provoking journey that delves deep into solitude and human nature, distinguishing itself with its atmospheric tension and unsettling plot. It's an absorbing, underseen gem that's absolutely worth checking out.
