Gran Turismo (2023)

Rating: 7/10
Runtime 134 minutes

"Gran Turismo" (2023) is an inspiring cinematic journey that beautifully encapsulates the life of Jann Mardenborough, a video game enthusiast who remarkably transforms into a professional race car driver for Nissan's Nismo team. This film expertly showcases his trials and triumphs, his tenacity, and his willpower. Notably, it also brings to light the unique initiative by Nissan's marketing executive, Danny Moore, who discovers and nurtures potential racing talent in gamers, thus bridging the gap between the virtual and real racing world.

One of the film's main highlights is the depiction of Jack Salter, a former driver who has since turned into a mechanic. His role, though subtle, is pivotal and adds much-needed depth to the storyline. The film's narrative beautifully encapsulates the challenges faced by Jann and his team, their rigorous training regimen, and the heart-stoppingly intense incident of Jann's near-fatal accident at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. These sequences add layers of emotional depth, making the story all the more riveting.

While "Gran Turismo" is based on a true story, certain creative liberties were taken with the narrative for the sake of cinematic storytelling. The timelines have been compacted to follow one group's journey over a single year instead of multiple people over several years. Additionally, the antagonistic rival racing team is a fictional creation, a composite representation of various real-life racing teams.

Despite these adjustments, the heart of the story remains true to real events. Both the real-life story and the cinematic portrayal of it are nothing short of incredible. The climax of the film is an adrenaline-fueled spectacle that truly captures the exhilarating spirit of motorsports. "Gran Turismo" is a must-watch for anyone seeking a thrillingly inspirational tale of determination and passion.

You should not watch Gran Turismo if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Gran Turismo?"I mean, it's like they took every car chase scene from every movie ever made and said, 'Hey, let's make a whole movie out of this.' I half expected Vin Diesel to pop out at any moment, offering family advice while doing donuts in a parking lot.

And all the shifting gears! I've never seen so much shifting in my life. It's like they're in a constant battle with the transmission. They're shifting more gears than a kid with a new bike on Christmas day!

And the characters, always whispering cryptic car terms like they're discussing state secrets. 'The camber alignment is off.' What? Is that code for 'The eagle has landed?' It's a car movie, not a spy thriller!

And let's not forget about the product placement. If I took a shot every time there was a close-up of a car logo, I'd be in the ER with alcohol poisoning. I get it, it's a Mercedes!

But hey, if you love cars, high-speed chases, and more shifting gears than a Tour de France race, then this is your Citizen Kane. But remember, no matter how fast they drive, they can't outrun the plot holes.
