Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)

Rating: 5/10
Runtime 154 minutes

"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" (2023) is not the kind of film that absorbs you completely. The immersion is often disrupted as you find yourself more engrossed in the technical aspects of the film than the storyline. It begins with a young CGI-version of Harrison Ford, leaving you pondering over the scenes that might have used a stunt actor with a digitally superimposed Ford's face, and the scenes featuring an older Ford with a youthfully rendered CGI face. Yet, the voiceover retains the palpable maturity of the seasoned actor.

The sight of aged Ford engaged in action sequences might give you a momentary worry about his well-being, but then you recall the magic of cinema that allows such feats. The narrative is somewhat convoluted. The character of Indy's goddaughter, who unfortunately lacks appeal, is given substantial screen time, while Marion Ravenwood, Indy's beloved wife, is scarcely seen.

The plot introduces a young boy who works as a bouncer and simultaneously learns the theory of flying a plane. He practices on a makeshift set of controls under the tutelage of a boisterous, socializing pilot. Interestingly, the pilot never teaches him how to land the plane. One wonders if this is an indication of the plot's future course, or a mere oversight by the screenwriters.

The film's conclusion showcases an impressive historical reenactment, but as a whole, the ending leaves you yearning for more. Questions about Indy's innocence, his marital status, and his son's fate are left hanging in the air. The film abruptly ends, leaving everything up to the viewer's interpretation. However, it provides little to no clues, making the ending feel abrupt and unsatisfactory. "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" is a film that leaves you with more questions than answers, and more curiosity about the making of the film than the film itself.

You should not watch Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny"? Harrison Ford is back, and it's like he's never left, except now he's mixing that iconic crooked smile with a dose of senior citizen charm. And Phoebe Waller-Bridge? She's trying to inject some Fleabag magic into the mix, but even her brilliance seems a bit lost among the ancient ruins and CGI landscapes. The villains, led by Mads Mikkelsen, are as menacing as a high school production of "The Bad Guy Monologues". And the action? Imagine the most elaborate game of tag you've ever seen, just with more explosions and fewer clear winners. It's like we're all aboard the nostalgia train, but someone's forgotten to lay the tracks
