The Beekeeper (2024)

"The Beekeeper" (2024) is an extravagant revenge fantasy.

Jason Statham successfully executes some of the most absurd action scenes I have ever witnessed, and he does so with impressive skill.

The plot, though scant, is a bit ludicrous. Statham plays a beekeeper who also happens to be a former member of a secret society, interestingly enough, also called 'The Beekeepers'.

The antagonists are not just figuratively, but literally bad. They present as exaggerated caricatures of themselves, hackers who swindle elders out of their life savings.

Despite its silliness, the entire movie delivers a peculiar sense of satisfaction.



You should not watch The Beekeeper if...

What's the deal with "The Beekeeper"? It's like they took a look at Jason Statham's filmography and said, "You know what he hasn't done yet? Bees!" And not just bees, but a secret society of beekeepers too! I mean, who's writing these scripts? The same people who gave us "The Da Vinci Code"?

Statham's character is a beekeeper but also a former member of a secret society of beekeepers. I mean, talk about typecasting! What's next, a movie about a guy who used to be a baker and then joins a covert operation of bakers? "The Breadmaker: Revenge of the Rye", anyone?

And don't even get me started on the villains. I've seen better characterisation at a children's birthday party. These guys are hackers who scam elders out of their life savings. Because nothing says "fear me" quite like stealing from the elderly. I mean, who are they going to fight in the sequel? A team of rogue girl scouts selling counterfeit cookies?

People who loved this movie also loved...
John Wick (2014):

Since you enjoyed "The Beekeeper", "John Wick" might be a perfect match for your taste. The movie features Keanu Reeves in the title role, who, like Jason Statham's character in "The Beekeeper", is a retired member of a secret society forced to seek revenge. Much like "The Beekeeper", this film is filled with over-the-top action scenes that are both thrilling and visually stunning. The plot is relatively straightforward, allowing the stylish action sequences to take center stage, which seems to align with what you found satisfying in "The Beekeeper". While the villains are genuinely nefarious, the sheer fun of the film does a great job of balancing out the darker elements.

The Transporter (2002):

"The Transporter" is another film starring Jason Statham that might appeal to you. It's another action extravaganza with a somewhat absurd premise, but Statham's aptitude for performing exciting action sequences makes the film a fun ride from start to finish. Although the character isn't a beekeeper, Statham's character in "The Transporter" is a former Special Forces operator turned mercenary, giving a similar mix of action and quirky backstory as found in "The Beekeeper".

Shoot 'Em Up (2007):

If you liked "The Beekeeper" for its over-the-top action and tongue-in-cheek humour, then "Shoot 'Em Up" is sure to appeal to you. This film, starring Clive Owen, is an intentional celebration of ridiculous action and unapologetically fun plot twists. Owen's character isn't a beekeeper or a member of a secret society, but he is just as interesting and eccentric. The villains of the film are equally cartoonish, which you might find enjoyable given your appreciation for the overdone bad guys in "The Beekeeper".

Haywire (2011):

Finally, "Haywire" could be a great choice if you're looking for another movie with a unique blend of action and a not-so-common backstory. Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring MMA fighter Gina Carano, "Haywire" delivers edge-of-your-seat thrills complemented by a captivating storyline about a black-ops super soldier seeking payback. It carries a similar energy to "The Beekeeper", with a balance of extreme action scenes and a story that doesn't take itself too seriously.
