"Paradise" (2023) is a thrilling action sci-fi film that presents an intriguing question: What if eternal youth was accessible to anyone who could afford it, but the cost was the literal life force of the less fortunate? The film centers on Max, a man who embarks on a desperate quest to restore his wife's youth after she is forced to relinquish four decades of her life. "Paradise" serves up the expected plot twists, eye-catching graphics, and themes of true love, but it also manages to offer some unique insights.
There are two particularly captivating elements in this film. The first is the cynical notion that the wealthy, if granted the opportunity to live forever, might finally be motivated to consider and address long-term environmental issues. The movie depicts a world where only the affluent can afford to prolong their lives indefinitely, thereby exacerbating wealth inequality.
The second compelling aspect of "Paradise" is a moral quandary akin to the classic trolley problem. Would you prolong your life at the expense of another's youth if it meant they were financially compensated? And if your youth or the youth of a loved one were taken from you, would you reclaim it, ethics be damned?
In the heat of the moment, would you risk your life to preserve that of a loved one? Conversely, would you forfeit your youth to save a loved one from premature aging? The film illustrates how it's simpler to passively drain someone's life through economic and medical means than to actively take a life at gunpoint. This not only mirrors the essence of the trolley problem but also of wealth inequality.
Theoretically, we could flip the switch to enhance the quality and longevity of many lives at the expense of a single wealthy individual's fortune. Yet, those in power passively opt against it. While "Paradise" doesn't delve as deeply into philosophical musings as I am here, preferring to concentrate on fast-paced action, true love, and dazzling sci-fi, I believe it serves as a subtle warning to the wealthy. As wealth inequality reaches a tipping point, a segment of the population may demand their fair share of the wealth, with no regard for ethics.
