Free Guy (2021)

Rating: 6/10
Runtime 115 minutes

"Free Guy" (2021) presents an intriguing concept - imagine a bank teller named Guy who discovers he's merely a non-player character in a brutal, open-world video game. Taking on the unexpected role of the hero, Guy shoulders the heavy task of saving his digital world. Yet, the film misses the chance to delve into arguably the most fascinating aspect of this premise, the true Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Another distracting element is the movie's frequent toggling between gaming graphics when viewed by real-world characters, and more realistic scenes when we, the audience, are drawn into the game within the game. This constant shifting disrupts the immersive experience.

Even more, the film sidesteps another profound question: If we were artificial intelligences in an artificial world, how would we discern our reality? This question, left unexplored, could have added a deeper layer to the narrative.

Despite these missed opportunities, "Free Guy" still manages to be an entertaining watch. This gleeful romp through a digital world is light-hearted and fun, making it an enjoyable cinematic experience. It's a popcorn movie with a unique premise that could have taken a deeper dive into the implications of AGI and our perception of reality. Nonetheless, it's still worth a watch for its imaginative storyline and engaging performances.

You should not watch Free Guy if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Free Guy?"I mean, here we have a movie about a character who's supposed to be a non-playable character in a video game, and he's more relatable than half the people I meet in real life!

You're telling me this guy puts on a pair of sunglasses and suddenly he's got more personality than my last three dates combined?

And, oh, the irony! A video game character who doesn't know he's in a video game, living a happier life than most of us who are actually free! What's up with that?

They've got this character walking around in a world of chaos and destruction, and he's just happy to be there, getting his morning coffee. That's not a video game, that's New York City!

And then there's this love story. One moment, he's a background character, next thing you know, he's got this love story that could rival Romeo and Juliet! I mean, here I am, a real guy in the real world, and I can't even get a text back! Maybe I should start wearing sunglasses and hope for a software update.
