The Suicide Squad (2021)

Rating: 7/10
Runtime 132 minutes

"The Suicide Squad" is a quirkily action superhero flick with gratuitous violence sprinkled randomly throughout.

While I prefer my superheroes to be a little more gritty and realistic, there is something charming about this ragtag collection of motley anti-heroes.

Warning, this review contains spoilers.

They have a walking shark who is a mouth breather, both literally and metaphorically.

They have a mangy-looking rodent, the queen of all rodents, a couple of sharpshooters, a captain, and of course, Harley Quinn.

The only letdown, aside from the terrible CGI, is the monster they have to fight.

At no point, in this R-rated movie, did I feel any fear that the monster might win.

In fact, I kind of felt sorry for the monster.

Sure, he wanted to turn everyone into a hive mind, but would anyone have really noticed the difference?

(Of course not, the hive mind wouldn't let them know the difference.)

You should not watch The Suicide Squad (2021) if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "The Suicide Squad", huh? I mean, the title itself is a spoiler. It's like calling "Titanic" - "The Big Boat That Sinks".

And, can we talk about the characters? There's a giant shark who wears shorts. I mean, who's his tailor? I can't even find a decent pair of jeans in my size, but this shark has no problem getting custom-made swim trunks?

And then there's Polka-Dot Man. A guy who throws polka-dots as a weapon. Why stop there? Why not have a Confetti Man or Glitter Girl? The villain would be too busy sneezing or trying to get that stuff out of their eyes.

Let's not forget about Ratcatcher 2. Talk about a tough gig, right? I mean, following in the footsteps of the original Ratcatcher - that's gotta be rough. It's like being the second guy to walk on the moon. Sure, it's cool, but everyone remembers Neil Armstrong, not Buzz Aldrin.

And the violence, oh the violence! It's like a Quentin Tarantino movie had a baby with a Marvel film. One second you're laughing, the next you're thinking "Did that guy's head just explode?"

And Harley Quinn...is there a more confusing love life in comic book history? She's like the Taylor Swift of the DC Universe. I half expect her next love interest to be a crash test dummy or a mop with googly eyes.

But you know what the most absurd part is? Despite all this, you find yourself actually caring about these misfits. It's like rooting for the bad news bears if they were sociopaths with access to heavy artillery.
